With DOMA’s (partial) defeat, a new world for LGBT elders

After decades of hard work, and the dedication of many LGBT pioneers, this is a moment for great pride—and a time to rededicate ourselves to creating a legal system that fully protects all LGBT people and their families.

On June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional. This law barred the federal government from recognizing married same-sex couples. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote: “Under DOMA, samesex married couples have their lives burdened, by reason of government decree, in visible and public ways,” and that DOMA wrongfully “instructs all federal officials … that their marriage is less worthy than the marriages of others.”
